Overview
The $6.8 million project was announced as part of the State Infrastructure Plan in April 2005. The interchange is to be constructed within the transport corridor at Oaklands Park. The project will result in the delivery of a modern, efficient interchange with facilities that are fully accessible for people with disabilities.
When complete, the Oaklands Transport Interchange will provide:
-
A new train station with associated bus interchange areas on Morphett Road
-
Facilities that enhance the safety and security of passengers such as monitored and recorded security cameras, duress alarms and increased lighting
-
A Park'n'Ride facility for more than 230 cars
-
Kiss'n'Ride zones for car passengers
-
New facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, including a new pedestrian crossing on the southern side of the rail line for pedestrians to safely cross Morphett Road
-
Automated gates for pedestrians to cross the tracks at the level crossing and either end of the station platforms
-
Other general passenger facilities including real time passenger information and a ticket sales kiosk
The interchange will provide high quality infrastructure with an emphasis on comfort, access, safety and security for all users.

Features of the New Interchange
Some of the features of the new Interchange are detailed below:
Connectivity with local bus services and facilities is recognised as an important issue for the local community and will be greatly enhanced through the provision of on-street bus bays on Morphett Road. Dedicated stops will provide ample opportunity for passengers to transfer between train and bus. Connectivity will also be improved with key local facilities including the Warradale shopping precinct, the Marion Westfield Centre, the Marion Health Village and the proposed State Aquatic Centre.
Pedestrian and cyclist safety will be a key feature of the interchange. A safe pedestrian crossing of Morphett Road is to be provided, integrating activation with boom gate operation to ensure minimal impact on traffic flows through this key local intersection. Reduced boom gate operating time of up to thirty minutes per day will be achieved through railway signaling reconfiguration at the level crossing.
Construction of new side platforms will reduce the number of times passengers must cross the tracks during a day’s journey while automated pedestrian gates will provide safety for pedestrians crossing the railway tracks.
Facilities will be designed to provide maximum protection from the elements and ensure that the experience for passengers using the Interchange is an enjoyable one. Covered, lit seating and waiting areas will be provided, which will allow direct sight lines through the station and surrounds to enhance passenger safety. Real time passenger timetabling information will be provided through continuously updating visual displays.
Accessible toilets with baby change facilities will be provided for passenger convenience.
Passenger security will be paramount in the design of the Interchange, and will incorporate Closed Circuit Television coverage of station, car parking and pedestrian walkway areas. Lighting will also be improved in all areas of the facility, and will be compliant with the requirements of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport. Duress alarms will be provided on platform areas. A ticket kiosk will be available during business hours for passenger convenience and added security.
With rising fuel costs it is recognised that public transport, particularly rail, will become increasingly important in commuters’ travel patterns. To support this, and make the rail journey as convenient as possible, TransAdelaide is endeavouring to provide sufficient, safe and secure park’n’ride, kiss’n’ride and bicycle storage facilities to cater for the various modes of transport commuters utilise to access our stations. Oaklands Interchange will provide over 230 park’n’ride spaces, a significant kiss’n’ride area, and an increased number of bicycle lockers. Accessible facilities will be provided to cater for the mobility impaired, including provision for accessible parking zones, and an accessible cab stand.
