Site Vegetation Management

Oaklands Station Vegetation Management Program

TransAdelaide engaged an independent Arborist to investigate the condition and safety of vegetation within the rail corridor and surrounds at Oaklands Station, and to prepare long term vegetation and habitat management plans for the station site.

The investigation was initiated as part of the planning for the proposed transport interchange.

A number of the trees at Oaklands Station and surrounds have been identified as a threat to public safety and require immediate management actions, including removal.

  • 81 trees of the 230 trees that make up the vegetation corridor at the site and surrounds have been recommended for removal. Of these, 66 require removal because they pose an actual or potential threat to public safety. The remaining 15 trees are exotic/weed species (9) and dead stumps (6) that have been recommended for removal to allow planting of appropriate replacement species.
  • TransAdelaide is required to act to manage the risk of tree limbs falling and injuring or killing members of the public. Falling branches are an ongoing concern at the site, and a number of instances have occurred in recent times. The removal of dead and dying trees is independent of the building of the Interchange.
  • No tree has been selected for removal to address the requirements of the Oaklands Transport Interchange.
  • Areas where trees are removed will be revegetated as part of the landscaping for the Interchange. Trees removed will be replaced by over 100 new trees of the same or similar species that will blend with and thrive in the area. In addition, some 7000 sedges and grasses to provide a thriving understorey for the new trees.
  • Remedial action such as expert pruning and ongoing maintenance will be taken to maximize the health and longevity of remaining trees.

Community Input

A vegetation management group has been convened to review the recommended management plans and their implementation. Specific consideration will be given to replanting, enhancing remaining trees, and relocation of nesting hollows. The group includes representatives from the community, Rural Solutions SA and City of Marion.

An application submitted to the Development Assessment Commission regarding the removal of significant trees has been approved. The remedial work process has commenced.
