1. ON-TIME RUNNING

Although TransAdelaide works hard to meet its on-time running targets, the performance of our trams can be affected by a number of factors. Trams may run late or be cancelled because of:

• Loadings (ie full vehicle or heavy loading)
• Traffic lights/congestion in the City or along Jetty Road
• Tram mechanical problems (or suspected mechanical problems)
• Signal, track, level crossing and points problems
• Passenger or staff illness or injuries

Sometimes our on-time running performance is affected by incidents beyond the control of TransAdelaide, for example, substation outage, severe weather conditions, police operations, non-TransAdelaide accidents and blocked track/heavy traffic (either in the City or along Jetty Road). TransAdelaide remains focused on improving communications to our customers in these circumstances.

On time running is reported as the percentage of journeys arriving at their destination and within 6 minutes of their published timetable time. On Time Running factors the amount of trips during the month which (a) experienced a delay of 6 minutes or more, and (b) were unable to run during the month (portion and/or full trips). This figure is calculated against the total trips timetabled for the month to provide an On Time Running percentage.

Tram On Time Running Performance

On-time running performance on the tram network averaged 92.2% for October 2008. Although this is slightly lower than last month (92.3% for September 2008), September’s result was the highest On Time Running result since January 2008 - therefore October is still a great result. Unfortunately, since the implementation of the extension, the Trams division has experienced a decline in On Time Running results. Prior to this, results in the range of 98% and 99% were consistently achieved.

Actual number of late running services (6 minutes or more) was the lowest amount of late running trips since January 2008.

The majority of delays relate to Heavy Loadings, Full Vehicle and/or Traffic Light sequence in the city. In such instances, the initial delayed trip creates a domino effect whereby services following are also delayed.

2. SERVICE RELIABILITY

Service reliability is reported as the percentage of services completing their timetabled journey. This incorporates either portion trips or full trips which were cancelled or could not run and is calculated against the total trips timetabled for the month to provide a Reliability percentage.

Tram Reliability

Reliability (trips missed as percentage of those timetabled) for October 2008 finished at 96.0%. As with On-Time running results, the Trams division has unfortunately experienced a decline in Reliability results since the implementation of the extension. Prior to this, results in the range of 98% and 99% were consistently achieved.

Actual services missed (either portion or full runs) in September was the lowest amount of missed trips since April 2008

The majority of missed trips for October related to:

• Portion runs cut (mainline and shuttle services) from South Terrace to City West due to a blackout in the CBD on the 20th October. Trams unable to enter/exit CBD.
• Portion runs cut (mainline and shuttle services) from Victoria Square to City West due to a suspicious parcel left in a CBD bank on the 20th October. Police evacuated the area, trams unable to enter/exit CBD.
• Portion runs cut (mainline and shuttle services) from South Terrace/Rundle Mall to City West due to the Teachers protest at Parliament House on the 30th October. Trams unable to enter/exit CBD.
• Shuttle runs cut throughout the month due to no staff available.
• The remaining missed trips relate to late running where it was necessary to cut a tram back from Brighton Road - Moseley Square (and back again) to make up time and return trams to run in accordance with the timetable.
